Why March Is the Best Month for South African Families to Ski in Livigno
Most ski resorts are winding down by March. Livigno isn’t. While the rest of the Alps starts thinking about spring, this high-altitude Italian valley is still delivering some of the season’s best conditions with wide, well-groomed pistes, reliable snow and relatively uncrowded slopes that are hard to find in peak season.
For South African families, the timing couldn’t be better. Our school calendar doesn’t naturally align with the European ski season…by the time our winter holidays arrive in June and July, the Alps are very much green. March is one of the few windows where everything lines up: the snow is still excellent, the days are getting longer and sunnier, and the slopes are quieter now that the European half-term crowds have gone home.

The school holiday sweet spot
South Africa’s Term 1 for 2027 runs through to 19 March, with the autumn school holiday following from 20 March to 5 April. That break falls right inside Livigno’s ski season, which typically runs from late November right through to early May. In practice, this means a family can fly out, enjoy a full week or two on the slopes, and be back in time for the new term, without a single day of school missed and without having to justify a mid-term absence to the school.
Compare that to December, when a ski trip has to compete with end-of-year exams, Christmas with extended family, and the most expensive flights and accommodation of the entire European season. March offers a far less pressured alternative.
Full snow, without the peak-season squeeze
Livigno sits at 1,816m and its slopes climb to 2,900m, which is high enough that the resort holds its snow reliably long after lower resorts have started to thin out. With the season running into early May, March is comfortably within the heart of it, not a shoulder-season gamble. You get the full 115km of pistes and all 33 lifts operating as normal, with a snow base that has been building since November.
What March doesn’t come with is the December and January rush. Christmas and New Year are peak booking periods for European skiing, which means fuller slopes, busier lift queues and the highest prices of the year. Travelling in March generally means a more relaxed resort, shorter queues, and better availability of accommodation, without giving up any of the skiing itself.
Better conditions for first-timers and younger children
Most South African families arriving in Livigno have never skied before, and March is a kinder month to learn in. Days are noticeably longer than in the depths of December, temperatures are milder, and there’s real spring sunshine to enjoy from a terrace at lunchtime. For young children especially, that combination matters: less time spent battling the cold and the dark, and more time actually on the snow, followed by an afternoon that doesn’t end the moment the lifts close.
A resort that’s genuinely built for families
Livigno isn’t just snow-sure; it’s set up for exactly this kind of trip. The town has English-speaking instructors for children and beginner adults alike, wide and gentle easy slopes separate from the more challenging terrain, and a free ski bus network that makes getting between your accommodation and the pistes simple, even without a car. The town centre itself is pedestrian-friendly, so once the skis come off for the day, wandering out for dinner or an ice cream is easy with kids in tow.
Beyond the slopes, there’s plenty to fill an afternoon off: tobogganing, go-karting and husky sledding all add to the kind of first ski trip that children talk about for years afterwards.
