Getting to Livigno from South Africa: Flight Routes, Stopovers & Travel Tips

Planning your first ski trip to Livigno? Getting there is easier than you think, and with the right routing, it can even be part of the adventure.

Livigno sits tucked into the Italian Alps near the Swiss border. It’s remote by design, and that’s part of what makes it so special. But for South African travellers, flights that far can seem like quite a trek. However, with some planning, the journey is more than manageable.

Here’s everything you need to know about getting from South Africa to the slopes.

Flights Out of South Africa

Most South African travellers depart from OR Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg) or Cape Town International Airport. Common airlines to consider for your long-haul flights include:

    • Emirates via Dubai
    • Etihad via Abu Dhabi
    • Qatar Airways via Doha
    • Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa (an underrated option which is usually very affordable)
    • Lufthansa via Frankfurt
    • Swiss via Zurich
    • BA via London
    • KLM via Amsterdam
    • AirFrance via Pari

Flying time from South Africa to your European gateway is typically  16 – 24 hours, including layovers, but it varies depending on the airline and routing.

The easiest place to end up is in Milan, to meet our scheduled bus that leaves every Saturday for Livigno, at 12 and 4pm. An example flight would look like CPT -> Addis, Addis -> Milan or CPT-> Doha, Doha -> Milan.

Getting from Milan to Livigno

Once you’ve landed, you have three options for the final leg:

    • SkiLivigno Scheduled Bus

Our scheduled bus service is the most popular choice among our clients. It departs directly from Milan airport, drops you at your accommodation in Livigno, and takes all the stress out of the final leg, no navigating Alpine roads after a long-haul flight, no worrying about winter driving conditions. You land, you board, and a few hours later, you’re in Livigno.

    • Private Transfer

If you’re travelling as a larger group or simply want a more comfortable, flexible arrival experience, a private transfer is an excellent option. Door-to-door from the airport to your accommodation, with no shared stops along the way. It costs more than the scheduled bus but is particularly good value when split across a group of four or more.

    • Rental Car

For those who want complete independence, a rental car gives you the freedom to set your own pace, stop for lunch in St. Moritz, pick up supplies in Bormio, or take a scenic detour along the way. Roads are well-maintained and clearly signposted, though winter tyres are mandatory in the Alps. Reputable rental companies fit these automatically during ski season, but always confirm when booking.

Stopover Tips: Making the Most of Your Journey

A stopover is almost inevitable on the way from South Africa to Europe — so why not lean into it?

While stopping over in Doha, Dubai, or Addis Ababa might not be the easiest thing to factor into your holiday, spending a night or two in Milan is a popular choice for our guests. If you fly in a day early, Milan rewards the extra night. The Brera district for dinner, the Duomo in the morning, and then the mountains. A perfect introduction to Italy before you reach the Alps.

Otherwise, we highly reccomend adding a European leg to your trip before or after skiing. Travelling via train across the continent is very easy and affordable, and a great way to visit other places in Italy like Rome, Florence, Pisa, and Venice!
