Livigno is a lively Italian resort offering 185km of slopes for all levels, more than 30 modern lifts, and two top snow parks. The ski area hosts high-level sports competitions, which attract famous athletes from around the world. Here are five things you may not know about Livigno . . .
1. Awesome Freeriding
Freeriders have many opportunities to satisfy their thirst for freedom and powder in Livigno. In 2013, the Freeride Project was launched which consisted of a series of initiatives – the first of which was a local avalanche bulletin to promote safety off-piste. There are designated freerider routes marked by entry gates on the Mottolino side of the valley.
2. Fat Biking
“Fat biking” – bikes with wide, low-pressure tyres ideal for cruising across the snow – is a growing trend that has been embraced in this popular holiday resort. Livigno jumped on the fat bike train quite early and has now reacted to the high consumer demand. Every year more bikers travel to the Italian resort for a winter shred. Livigno now offers dedicated routes in the woods of Valandrea and Val Federia as well as 20km of new trails for fat biking during wintertime.
3. Duty-Free Shopping
The village lies in a wild and secluded valley at 1,800m. Its duty-free status is directly related to its isolated position: until 1952, when the pass Foscagno (linking Bormio to Livigno) was opened to traffic in winter, the village remained inaccessible for many months a year.
The village was built along the Spöl stream and is dotted with numerous shops and mini markets – more than 250! The town calls it ‘an outside shopping mall’. The shops are open seven days a week and sell everything you can possibly want or need: from perfumes to kitchenware, clothes, toys, specialty food, and electronics. You can of course buy tobacco, alcohol, and petrol as well. Many old stone and wood houses have been skilfully restored and are home to luxury boutiques rivalling those of the fashion district in Milan.
4. Free Ski Pass
“Free Ski Passes” up to 22 December 2018, all ski passes are free when booking accommodation for the same duration. This is a great saving in the traditionally quieter yet still snow safe pre-Christmas weeks.
5. Cross-Country Skiing
Livigno offers 30km of cross-country ski tracks that wind along the entire valley, from Forcola to the area of the lake, passing the technical path of “Marianna Longa”. La Sgambeda, the international ski marathon, officially opens the racing season every December.
When you book your ski holiday between 01 December and 22 December 2018 – you get a free ski pass included in your package!
What a super way to enjoy skiing in the “Little Tibet” of Italy, with secure early and late season snow. 115 km of perfectly prepared slopes, modern mountain railways, one of the biggest Snowpark in Europe at the Ski Area Mottolino or the new Snowpark at the Skiarea Carosello 3000 for every level and age and snow-making system which assures the coverage of 80% of the slopes.

Therefore, Livigno Card Winter is precious for your holidays both in winter and in summer (in its Summer version) and is available at participating hotels and apartments or directly at the Tourist Office. For the 2017/18 winter season, the Livigno Card Winter includes a wide range of different activities, such as tandem paragliding, quad and snowmobile excursions, safe driving on ice courses, snow play grounds for children, ski lift and lunch in a refuge, skiing lessons and competitions, food and wine tasting tours, snowshoe walks, Nordic walking, fat bike excursions and sledging.
Altitude training improves athletic performance by acting on the oxygen transport mechanisms. Training at high altitude is particularly indicated for sports that require intense and constant aerobic activity. Located at 1816 meters of altitude, Livigno is ideal for this type of training and has become one of the most popular destinations for athletes and sports federations from across the world.
Aside altitude, Livigno can offer teams and individual athletes a wide range of services: modern and constantly improving sporting facilities and dedicated structures able to satisfy all sports needs and requirements.
Aquagranda Active You center has given a tangible contribution in this direction, providing a 25-metre swimming pool (plans are in place for a 50-metre swimming pool) and soon an athletics track with a grass football pitch in the centre will be added to the sporting facilities available.
Plans are in place to build a new spinning room and dedicate an area of the gym to TRX Suspension Train
Malpensa ( MXP ) in Italy is still by far the most popular airport for skiers arriving for their holiday to Livigno.
Scheduled coach transfers collect at the Transfer Centre at Malpensa airport and drop off / collect at the Central Arrival/Collection point in Livigno. skiLivigno now offers the VIP service coupled to the Livigno Express, directly to the hotel! Livigno has long been known for its duty free prices, a privilege gained circa 1840 because of its isolation and poverty. Until the late 1950’s there was no road through to Livigno during the winter months, and as a result, it was completely cut off from the outside world for five months every year.
Unlike many other tax or duty free ‘bargains’ elsewhere, duty free in Livigno can mean some superb deals. Here are some sample prices from the Co-op in the centre of Livigno. There are more than 250 shops in the resort, and it isn’t just alcohol and tobacco that is duty free. There are an abundance of shops selling clothing, electronics, footwear, cosmetics etc., including famous brands such as Max Mara, Benetton, Timberland and much, much more.
For visitors planning to drive to Livigno, fuel is also extremely cheap with diesel costing about €1.05 per litre and petrol €1.10 per litre.
